Appenzell Museum of Customs
The rustic museum is located in a weathered old traditional Appenzell house more than 400 years old.
The interior of this museum of local traditions captivates visitors with its structure, homely atmosphere and the low, angled rooms with sloping wooden floors. It provides insight into the rural farming culture of the Appenzell region, traditional crafts and the customs deeply rooted in the population in the Urnäsch valley basin that are still practised today. Featured are the “ Silvesterchläuse ” when locals dress up in beautiful or ugly costumes on New Year’s Eve, the annual trip to and from the cattle’s summer pastures, alpine dairies, farmers’ paintings and string music. Traditional craftsmanship also has its place.
