Altes Lagerhaus (Old Storehouse)

Together with the train station and the main post office, the Storehouse on the Davidstrasse 40-46 is the symbol of St.Gallen being a business location as well as a transhipment point.

History:
Eastern Switzerland had depended on good commercial international relations for a long time, since the local needs were far smaller than the amount of goods produced in the area. With the expansion of commercial activities, the importance of logistics took centre stage: The success of manufacturing sites depended on operative transport and storage infrastructures in order to reach distant customers efficiently and smoothly.Mail and express steamers had to deliver the precious goods to New York, Mexico, East India, China, Japan and Australia.

Present-day use:
Today the Storehouse is a multi-purpose building used for museums, creativity and catering. In the loft-style restaurant, culinary treats are attracting guests. In the back of the building, where goods used to be loaded on railway waggons, a noise-protected beer garden amidst the business centre grants one of todays very rare goods: silence.
